SHAMOKIN - Two city men escaped injury after their vehicle crashed into and sheared a utility pole along Route 61 near Shamokin's welcome sign on Sunday.
Nate Boyer, 26, was driving a 2000 Lincoln Continental north towards the city about 5 p.m. when he said a white passenger vehicle cut him off, causing him to lose control of his four-door sedan, drive onto a sidewalk and wreck into the pole, police said.
The crash occurred in the northbound lane, a short distance from Pool World and down the highway from where two lanes merge into one.
Neither Boyer nor passenger Zachary Tyson, 25, reported having been injured.
Boyer told Shamokin Patrolman Jarrod Scandle that the suspect vehicle had either four or five occupants but did not know its make or model.
Impact from the crash left the pole sheared and resting on its bottom end on the highway about 1 foot from where it was originally erected. A highway road sign was also knocked over.
The Continental's front end was badly damaged, with fluid having leaked onto the sidewalk and parts of the vehicle's body and engine spread around the pole. It was disabled and towed from the scene.
Route 61 was closed briefly between Vine Street and the red light at Pizza Hut while the scene was cleared.
Both Service Electric and Verizon were contacted about the pole's damage.
Scandle said the accident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call city police at 648-5708.
Assisting at the scene were members of Shamokin Fire Bureau and Fire Police.
