BEAR GAP - A 27-year-old Ralpho Township man escaped injury Monday morning when he lost control of the car he was driving on ice-covered Route 54 on the Natalie Mountain. The car flipped onto its roof.

Adam Cook, of 332 S. Market St., Elysburg, said he was on his way to work in Pottsville when the accident occurred about 8 a.m.

Brian Hollenbush, Mount Carmel Township police chief, said Cook was driving east and ascending Natalie Mountain on the Elysburg side when his 2007 Saturn Ion slid on black ice, crossed the westbound lane and stuck an embankment, causing the vehicle to flip onto its roof.

Police said a heavy dew and freezing temperatures caused icy conditions on the highway between Natalie and Bear Gap and that contributed to the accident.

Cook refused medical treatment. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle, which was towed.

Also responding to the scene were township patrolmen Brian Carnuccio and Matt Filarski, members of Natalie Fire Co. and East End Fire Co., Kulpmont, and AREA Services.
