ATLAS - A public meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. today at the American Legion, Route 61, regarding possible changes to operating hours at the Locust Gap Post Office.
A similar meeting regarding the Herndon Post Office was held Tuesday.
Both post offices have established a review process and evaluation known as the POST plan, and will be soliciting community input to help determine a course of action. Surveys have also been distributed.
After receiving results of the survey, the postal service will examine the responses and, unless the community leans more than 60 percent toward a certain preference for conducting a discontinuance study at both offices and establishing a different source of service, the Locust Gap Post Office will maintain two hours of window service and Herndon Post Office will maintain six hours of window service per weekday.
For both offices, current Saturday window service hours and access to delivery receptacles will not change as a result of the POST Plan realignment of weekday window service hours.
At the meeting, local management will share the results of the survey, answer questions and solicit input regarding times the post offices will be open.
Although survey results will be known and shared, the postal service says it will not make a final decision regarding the offices until after the public meetings, enabling it to obtain all community input and opinions from both the surveys and the meetings.
The postal service is also seeking locally established businesses or organizations to serve as contractor-operated postal retail units in local communities. These units will operate in combination with a community's post office.
In September 2011, 40 Locust Gap residents attended a public meeting and expressed their interest in keeping their post office operating as it is now.
