Here is a timeline of fires from the past week and those from 2012 involving the same Shamokin neighborhood as some of the recent fires:
Wednesday, Sept. 5: A fire breaks out shortly after 10 p.m. inside the rear of 717 N. Shamokin St., Shamokin, and quickly spreads to other abandoned structures at 719, 721, 721-A, 723 and 725 N. Shamokin St. Three properties in all are damaged, all of which are eventually condemned, but the property at 717 N. Shamokin St. sustained the most damage, while 719 also had considerable damage. The fire, which was immediately considered suspicious, rekindles at 8:45 a.m. Thursday.
Friday, Sept. 13: Another fire starts at 717 N. Shamokin at 3:30 p.m. It is quickly brought under control, but police add this blaze to their investigation of the Sept. 5 incident.
Thursday, Jan. 24: Fire strikes at 725 N. Shamokin St., a vacant three-story brick apartment building without electricity that stands on the southeast corner of Shamokin and Sunbury streets, and one of the same that was damaged in September. The 4:15 a.m. fire is ruled suspicious.
Thursday, Jan. 24: For the second time in less than 24 hours, fire crews responded to Shamokin Street - this time three blocks away at the former Hardshell Cafe, 422 N. Shamokin St. As firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire, reported at 7:15 p.m., smoke pours from the basement of the structure and a nearby building at 420 N. Shamokin St. The fire at both unoccupied structures was under control by 10 p.m. Both Jan. 24 fires are considered suspicious.
Friday, Jan. 25: The trailer home of George Jones, 26, of 1432 State Route 125, Coal Township, catches fire shortly after 9 p.m. The blaze is blamed on a boiler and is not considered suspicious.
Saturday, Jan. 26: A family of six is left homeless when their ranch house along Route 54 in Rush Township, midway between Elysburg and Riverside, is destroyed by flames. The fire, blamed on a wood stove, started about 6 p.m. while the family was not home.
Monday, Jan. 28: Two double-homes were destroyed and four other buildings damaged in a fire along Chestnut Street (Route 61) in Kulpmont that started just before 5 a.m. Investigators don't expect to determine a cause because of the extensive damage limits the investigation, but the fire is not considered suspicious.
Monday, Jan. 28: Several animals perish and a home is gutted as fire strikes at 1479 Wabash St., at the corner of Sherman Street, at 7:25 p.m., in the Springfield section of Coal Township. It is ruled accidental and blamed on a faulty electrical outlet.
Monday, Jan. 28: Firefighters respond to the 600 block of East Sunbury Street - around the corner from the 700 block of Shamokin Street - for a structure fire at a abandoned three-story building. Police on Tuesday charged a 22-year-old Shamokin man with arson in connection with that blaze.
