SHAMOKIN - Tickets for this year's train ride during the upcoming Anthracite Heritage Festival of the Arts are now available.
Beverly's Flower Shop, Shuey Jewelers and Susquehanna Bank, all along Independence Street in the downtown, have tickets for sale for the two train excursions at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, May 25. Tickets also are available at The News-Item, 707 N. Rock St., Shamokin, City Hall, 47 E. Lincoln St., Shamokin, Mac's Hoagies, 904 W. Arch St., Coal Township, and Academy Sports, 18 S. Oak St., Mount Carmel.
The cost is $10 each. "Lap children" ride free.
Any leftover tickets will be available the day of the rides at the boarding site in the municipal parking lot on Water Street behind the downtown. Boarding begins one-half hour before each ride.
This year's train ride will cover more ground than in years past. It departs the parking lot and travels north through Shamokin, into Coal Township and through Tharptown. It will continue toward Paxinos, passing through Shamrock Mills and into the Reed Industrial Park before reversing course and heading back to Shamokin.
The passenger excursion is made possible through the cooperation of the Penn Valley Railroad, the Shamokin Valley Railroad and the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority.
All proceeds benefit Shamokin's 150th Anniversary Celebration in July 2014.
