BLOOMSBURG - A Coal Township student is among those involved in BU Players' latest production, "Dead Man's Cell Phone," which centers on the question: What sort of adventure can begin just by answering someone else's phone?
The BU Players, Bloomsburg University's theatre ensemble, will present the comedic play by Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Ruhl from Feb. 22 to 26 with performances Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee Sunday at 3 p.m. All performances will be held in the Alvina Krause Theatre, 226 Center St., Bloomsburg. Directed by David Dannenfelser, visiting assistant professor of theatre, the story focuses on a central character, Jean, who is absorbed into a recently deceased man's life, business and personal affairs by answering his cell phone. Symbolically, the play is a commentary on the loss of connection within today's society.
"It certainly has caused me to think about technology and the role it plays in my life," said Ethan Krupp, associate professor of theatre and lighting designer for this production. "I've found myself wondering: when does the technology stop being something used just to make a job easier, faster or better and take on a life of its own?"
The cast is made up of 10 students: Gabriella Russo, Effort; Robert Pellechio, East Norriton; Megan Young, Lock Haven; Jaryn Wilcox, Canton; Ben Deivert, Northumberland; Lauren Shover, Camp Hill; Phil Czekner, Harleysville; Donovan Krebs, Coal Township; Sydney Hare, Hubert, N.C.; and Michelle Boyce, Bensalem. BU student Josh Curren of Gillett is the set designer and fellow student Courtney Costello, Pittston Township, is the stage manager. Costume design is by Emma Scholl, visiting assistant professor of theatre.
