All five candidates in Tuesday's primary for seats on the Southern Columbia Area School Board move on to the general election.
Four of the five candidates filed for more than one race, and two of them successfully won nominations for more than one seat.
For the first time this year, Southern Columbia is selecting some members at large. In addition to seats that are filled by region, there were two four-year positions and one two-year position on the ballot to be elected by voters district-wide.
At-large, 4-year
In a three-way race for two four-year seats to be elected at large, newcomer Joseph Klebon won both Democratic and Republican nominations, Incumbent Charles Porter won the Republican nomination, and Mike Yeager, also an incumbent, is the apparent winner of the second Democratic nomination by a slim margin.
District-wide results: Republican, Klebon, 305 votes; Porter, 263, and Yeager, 189. Democrat: Klebon, 228; Yeager, 151, and Porter, 146.
Results are unofficial; final figures will take into account absentee and provisional ballots.
At-large, 2-year
Incumbent board member Gail Zambor Schuerch won both the Democratic and Republican nominations for a two-year seat to be elected at large. She was the only candidate on both ballots.
She received 347 Republican votes, and 249 Democratic votes.
Region 1
In a head-to-head contest to represent the board from Region 1 (Ralpho Township), Klebon handily defeated Yeager in both the Republican and Democratic primaries.
On the Republican ballot, Klebon had 146 votes, and Yeager had 48.
For the Democrats, Klebon polled 104 votes, with 40 for Yeager.
Region 2, 4-year
Incumbent school director Charlene Cove won the Democratic nomination for a four-year position on the board for Region 2. Cove had 59 votes.
There was no Republican candidates on the ballot.
Region 2 consists of Catawissa Borough and Catawissa Township.
Region 2, 2-year
No candidates filed in either party for a two-year seat on the board. There was a handful of write-ins in both parties, but probably not enough to earn nominations.
Region 3
Porter defeated Zambor Schuerch to earn both the Republican and Democratic nominations for a seat representing Region 3.
On the Republican ballot, Porter had 113 votes, compared to 63 for Zambor Schuerch. Democratic totals were 74 votes for Porter and 37 for Zambor Schuerch.
Region 3 is comprised of Cleveland, Franklin, Locust and Roaring Creek townships.
As a result of the primary voting, Klebon is poised to win election to two different board seats (at large and Region 1) in November, and a double victory is also possible for Porter (at large and Region 3). A candidate who is elected to more than one seat must choose one, with the school board then appointing someone to fill the other one.
