SUNBURY - Sunbury police have agreed to provide assistance to the Northumberland County Prison when asked to do so by the coroner.
A meeting was held this week between city and county officials to discuss a disagreement that resulted when police did not respond to the jail following a recent suicide by an inmate.
According to The Daily Item newspaper in Sunbury, a solution was reached following what started out as a contentious discussion.
The meeting was attended by Commissioners Vinny Clausi, Stephen Bridy and Rick Shoch, President Judge Robert Sacavage, Coroner James Kelley, District Attorney Tony Rosini, Sunbury Mayor David Persing and Chief of Police Steve Mazzeo.
Bridy told the Sunbury newspaper that under the new policy, Sunbury police will be called first to assist in investigations at the prison, but in the event Sunbury officers are not available, state police at Stonington will be summoned.
