WILKES-BARRE - A Mount Carmel man pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to embezzling more than $7,000 from a local chapter of The United Steelworkers union.
Bernard C. Nolter Jr. entered his plea in the U.S. District Court Federal Building, 197 S. Main St., Wilkes Barre, before U.S. Magistrate Judge William I. Arbuckle.
A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled, but the maximum penalty for false entry or willful concealment of books and records is imprisonment for a period of one year, a fine of $100,000, a supervised release of up to one year, costs of prosecution and denial of certain federal benefits.
Nolter pleaded guilty to embezzling $7,047.23 from AFL-CIO Local 635, in which authorities said he made a false entry in the financial records to the Secretary of Labor during the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2011.
Nolter, who is hereby released, is represented by Melinda C. Chilardi, first assistant federal public defender of Scranton.
He will be ordered to appear at the U.S. District Courthouse and Federal Building, 240 W. Third St., Williamsport, at a date yet to be scheduled.
