ELYSBURG - A local Cub Scout pack made good on their promise "to help other people" by dedicating a cubmobile in honor of two scouts killed in a school shooting.
Scouts of Pack 3249, Elysburg, refurbished the racing vehicle in memory of 7-year-old Chase Kowalski and 6-year-old Benjamin Wheeler, two Tiger scouts killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., last December. A Tiger is a rank in the Cub Scout program for boys who are attending first grade.
The attacker, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, shot and killed himself after killing 20 students and six educators.
The names of the two young victims are positioned between two Tiger hats and the words "Rest in Peace" on the back of the bright-yellow cubmobile; "Pack 170, Connecticut Yankee Council," the pack which the Scouts were members of, was painted on the front.
Brothers Conner and Carter Kurtz, 10- and 7-years-old, drove the cubmobile in the All Home Days parade Saturday in Elysburg. Afterward, the pack gathered around the cubmobile and had their photo taken with it. The photo, along with a letter of sympathy, will be sent to the council.
Committee member Dave Hoy said the cubmobile will stay in Elysburg and will be driven in memory of the Scouts. He said the letter and the photo is a way to express the pack's thoughts and prayers that go out to the victims in Connecticut.
