ATLAS - The Mount Carmel Township Board of Supervisors moved closer Wednesday night to relocating the township police station by voting to assume all costs associated with the purchase of two lots.

The lots, which are adjacent to the current township property at 300 Laurel St., were owned by Atlas Fire Company and were purchased at a cost of $11,000.

The township will place a 1,680-square-foot modular classroom, purchased for $5,011.73 from the Danville Area High School, on the lots.

It will quadruple the amount of space the current police station takes up, supervisors said.

The motion to assume costs was made and seconded by supervisors Reynold Scicchitano and Joseph Zanella. It passed 2-0 with Chairman Charles Gasperetti abstaining since he is the Atlas fire chief.

The supervisors also approved a handicap parking ordinance that supersedes all previous ordinances relating to the same subject.

In this new ordinance, all handicap parking permits will be void and anyone wanting to be considered for handicap parking must re-submit their application in January.

A fee of $150 for the first year will be required, and each additional year will cost $100.

Each handicap parking space will also be plate specific.

Upon request by resident Rich Mychak, the street department will be giving a monthly report starting at the next meeting in October.

In other business:

- The supervisors approved the purchase of 115 W. Forrest St. for $106.50 from the Northumberland County Repository List. The supervisors said it is their intent to eventually tear the building down.

- A representative of U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta (R-11) will be at the township building from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Oct. 22.

- Trick or Treat night will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
