LEWISBURG - Two Lewisburg Area High School students, including the grandson of Mount Carmel residents, received recognition this summer in Washington, D.C., as first-place winners of the annual Stock Market Game Capitol Hill Challenge competition.
Students Brett Clark and Daniel Cole finished first in the competition with a portfolio of $285,443.00. They started the competition with $100,000 and in 14 weeks saw a 185 percent return.
Daniel Cole is the son of Dr. Charles and Wendy Cole, of Winfield, and the grandson of Robert and Jean Varano, of Mount Carmel, and the late Charles and Antoinette Cole, of Mount Carmel.
For their first-place finish, the students, accompanied by their teacher Michael Creeger, won a three-day trip to Washington, D.C. to meet members of Congress, meet with financial planning companies, tour the Capitol, and learn more about national economic policies. They also met with U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey and U.S. Rep. Tom Marino. Marino met with the young men in his office and discussed finances, Washington policies and the importance of fiscal responsibility.
The competition is played in all 50 states with more than 13,000 participants. Clark and Cole achieved the highest return ever in the history of the game and were the first freshmen to win first place. The competition is sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and encourages small teams of students to learn about stock trade and economic markets. Another team from Lewisburg finished 10th in the competition.
