SNYDERTOWN - Three teenagers escaped injury shortly before noon Saturday when a car in which they were riding caught fire on Snydertown Road in Shamokin Township, about three miles east of here.
All three exited the vehicle only moments before it became fully engulfed, sending fire and smoke high into the air.
The driver of the vehicle, who identified himself at the scene as Talon Tucker, 19, of Sunbury, said he and two companions were en route to a junk yard not far from where the vehicle caught fire.
"All of a sudden there was heavy smoke," he said. "I drove off the side of the road over an embankment and all of us got out of the car." He thought it may have begun with the brakes.
By the time firefighters from Elysburg and Stonington arrived, flames had already erupted throughout the vehicle.
Traffic was detoured from the area for a short time.
The two other occupants of the vehicle were identified as Marissa Wolfe and Mike Leffler, both of Sunbury.
