COAL TOWNSHIP - Organizers of the Jean Stellfox Memorial Award will hold a fundraiser Memorial Day weekend to raise money for the scholarship.

The first Stellfox Award will be presented this year to the valedictorian of the 2012 graduating class of Shamokin Area High School.

The fundraising event will begin at 1 p.m. May 27 at Nostrovia, 1000 W. State St. A $5 donation is asked for entry.

Musicians Todd Troutman and Kyle Morgan will perform with special guests. Food and drink will be sold as well as tickets for a 50/50 drawing.

"It's our first attempt to raise money for it and we'd like to be successful," said John Taby, one of a group of Stellfox's former students who are organizing the scholarship and event.

Stellfox was killed more than eight years ago by a hit-and-run driver while crossing West Third Street in Mount Carmel. It's a case that remains unsolved.

"We want to memorialize her name and not forget about her. She's affected our lives and we want to do something good for her," he said.

The scholarship award will total $500 this year but Taby and other committee members hope to raise enough money to increase the award in coming years.

Anyone who would like to donate toward the award write a check to the Jean Stellfox Memorial Award and send it to Shamokin Area Middle/High School, c/o Principal Chris Venna, 2000 W. State St., Coal Township, PA 17866.
