DANVILLE - "Make it the Best: A History of Geisinger Health System 1912-2001," by Donald D. Housley, is now available for purchase.
The book traces Geisinger's history from 1912, when it was first envisioned by Abigail Geisinger, to the 2001 arrival of Dr. Glenn Steele, current president and chief executive officer.
A ceremonial book-signing was held in November 2011 with Housley and the late Dr. Henry Hood, Geisinger president and chief executive officer emeritus. Hood served Geisinger from 1957 through 1992 as an accomplished neurosurgeon and chief of staff and for 17 years as president and chief executive officer. He passed away Feb. 18 at his home at Riverwoods Continuing Care Retirement Community in Exeter, N.H.
"Several years ago, Dr. Hood and I decided to move forward with a history of Geisinger based largely on Dr. Hood's recollections and records," said Steele. "We commissioned Donald Housley, professor emeritus of history at Susquehanna University, to work with Dr. Hood to write the text, and we are pleased that the tangible results of their collaboration are finally available for the public to enjoy."
The book is available for $5 at www.geisinger.org or in giftshops at the Danville hospital or Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.
All proceeds from book sales will benefit the Henry Hood Center for Health Research.
